The Department of Political Affairs provides substantive and secretariat support to the United Nations Security Council, helping the Council to carry out its responsibilities under the U.N. Charter for maintaining international peace and security.

DPA’s Security Council Affairs Division:

• Advises Council members, other Member States and staff of the Secretariat regarding procedural and substantive matters;

• Prepares the procedural briefs of the President of the Council;

• Drafts key documents including the Security Council’s Annual Report to the General Assembly;

• Processes letters and reports of the Secretary-General and other documentation as Security Council documents;

• Provides support to the Council’s Sanctions Committees and  Working Groups as well as its Counter-Terrorism Committee and 1540 Committee in drafting reports, and conducting analysis and assessments upon request;

• Prepares the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council.

• Maintains the website of the Security Council
