Afghanistan
The mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has been extended until 28 March 2004. On 13 October 2003, the Council extended the mandate of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan for 12 months, until 20 December 2005. On 12 February 2004, Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Jean Arnault of France as his Special Representative in Afghanistan and Head of UNAMA. He replaces Lakhdar Brahimi of Algeria who relinquished the post on 6 January 2004 and is now Special Adviser to the Secretary-General.

Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Security Council on 11 July 2003 extended the mandate of the multinational stabilization force (SFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 12 months, until 11 July 2004.

Côte d'Ivoire
The Security Council on 27 February 2004 established the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) for an initial period of 12 months, until 4 April 2005. It also decided to transfer authority to UNOCI from the expiring mandate of the United Nations Mission in Côte d'Ivoire (MINUCI) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) forces on 4 April 2004.

Cyprus
The Security Council on 24 November 2003 extended the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for 6 months, until 15 June 2004.

Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Security Council on 28 July 2003 extended the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) for 12 months, until 30 July 2004. It also decided to raise the MONUC troop level to 10,800 and instituted a 12-month arms embargo in the eastern part of the country.

Eritrea and Ethiopia
The Security Council on 12 March 2004 extended the United Nations Mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia (UNMEE) for 6 months, until 15 September 2004.

Georgia
The Security Council on 30 January 2004 extended the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) for 6 months, until 31 July 2004.

Haiti
The Security Council on 29 February 2004 authorized the immediate deployment of a multinational interim force to Haiti for 3 months, until the end of May 2004. On 26 February, Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed John Reginald Dumas of Trinidad and Tobago as his Special Adviser for Haiti.

Iraq
The Security Council on 22 May 2003 decided to lift all sanctions against Iraq. On 14 August, it established the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) for an initial period of 12 months, until 14 August 2004. On 6 October 2003, the mandate of the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) expired. On 24 November, the Council decided to establish a Committee to track financial assets removed from Iraq by persons connected to Saddam Hussein. The Committee came into effect on 22 November 2003, when the Council's "661 Committee" on Iraq sanctions was terminated.

Liberia
The Security Council on 19 September 2003 established the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) for an initial period of 12 months, until 19 September 2004. It also decided to transfer authority from the ECOWAS forces to UNMIL on 1 October 2003.

Libya
The Security Council on 12 September 2003 decided to lift all sanctions against the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

Middle East
The Security Council on 19 November 2003 endorsed the "Road Map" towards a permanent two-State solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and called on the parties to fulfil their obligations under the plan, in cooperation with the Quartet (European Union, Russian Federation, United States and United Nations). On 22 December 2003, the Council extended the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), between Israel and Syria, for 6 months, until 30 June 2004. On 30 January 2004, it extended the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for 6 months, until 31 July 2004.

Sierra Leone
The Security Council on 19 September 2003 extended the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) for 6 months, until 31 March 2004. On 18 July 2003, it approved the drawdown of UNAMSIL in four stages, culminating in complete withdrawal of the Mission by 31 December 2004.

Somalia
The Security Council on 8 April 2003 decided to re-establish the Panel of Experts to investigate violations of the arms embargo against Somalia. On 16 December 2003, it requested the Secretary-General to establish a Monitoring Group, for an initial period of six months, to focus on ongoing arms embargo violations.

Timor-Leste
The Security Council on 19 May 2003 extended the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) for 12 months, until 20 May 2004.

Western Sahara
The Security Council on 30 January 2004 extended the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara for 3 months, until 30 April 2004.
