The story of human civilization has been the story of its
cities. From the ancient civilizations of Egypt, China and
Mesopotamia to the Mediterranean world of Greece and
Rome to the stone citadels of the Maya and the Aztec all the
way to today's bustling metropolises, cities have been at the
center of the greatest civilizations. They have been called the
highest forms of social organization. Indeed, the cities of today
have grown into very complex and contradictory places, holding
