Unit 1: What is a City?
The objectives of unit one are to introduce students to:
- the various definitions of the city
- the concepts of "urbanization" and "urban growth"
- the complexity of cities and their significance at the end of the 20th century
- the fact that by the 21st century over half the world population will be living in cities
- the city as both the key to progress and the doorway to disaster for our current civilization
