ASAP: Atlas of Student Action for the Planet

WATER - EAU - MAR  WATER

Water

The main idea:

The topic "water" cannot be discussed in depth in the chemistry and biology classes because of the time limitation. There is a special project which aims at increasing the general knowledge about water. In this case, the project is to be carried out by a volunteer research group of students and teachers.

A big priority is the possibility of connecting the school project with the activities within SEMEP. This allows not only the regional and international exchange of information and the result of similar projects, but more so it gives opportunities for face to face meetings among students from different countries, who are interested in the same topic. This way the foreign language lessons become vivid and come close to reality. This creates motivation and has psychological advantages.

Work groups:

1.Water and organisms, water consumption and the possibility of conserving water.

Besides the absolute necessity of water for life on our planet, it must also be pointed out how high the water content of organisms and all kinds of food is. A practical approach to this problem will be applied. The natural water cycle should be performed and presented by the students. They should examine their own daily water consumption and compare it with their other family members. As a result of this, the possibility of saving water must be realized.

2. Water insurance and purification of the waste water.

The students should generalize information about water resources in their motherland and illustrate the water net of Sofia city. In connection with this, water recycling in Sofia should be studied and the way the water equipment works should be considered. This will enable us to compare the optimal state with the local water supplies. The students will examine all of the infection parameters and will create and optimize a natural water filter through experimentations.

3. Drinking water and irrigation.

On the grounds of the quality of the drinking water, the average expenses should be examined. As part of a quantitative research project, the water 'hardness' should be analyzed and the ways in which that affects the daily usage. Apart from direct water consumption by the students and their families, the irrigation problems for agricultural purposes should also be discussed. The aim here is to obtain statistical data about the use of drinking water for agricultural purposes.

All three groups are interested in e-mail contacts, to exchange and compare information and results with other participants in this project. This is a basis for understanding the problems and interests of other cultural regions and it also helps to promote tolerance among different peoples and their goodwill for mutual help and cooperation.
