Creative Recycling Concepts Our team of 75 fifth graders were divided into six groups: Production, research and development, sales, advertising, inventory and accounting. Each group participated in researching things that could be made from recycled materials. The materials were then collected, assembled and sold in the cafeteria and on special occasions. The store was open on Wednesdays. Items sold included candleholders from old candles and glass bottles, book covers from cereal boxes, bookmarks from newspaper comics and mobiles from 2-liter soda bottles. A color catalog was created and put on the school’s webpage for all classes to see. Students not only learned about recycling options but also the basics of running a business. Each group would meet weekly and brainstorm ideas on how to improve the business and diversify the products. The money raised was used to reward students for using the school’s recycling programs and for paying for items the team used during the year.
