Ecology Council

The H. Frank Carey Ecology Council, established in 1970, strives to improve the environment both locally and globally. The Ecology Council leads our community and state in recycling. We established our recycling program in 1970 and constructed a recycling center on the school grounds in 1976. Since then the program has continued to grow. With the help of the school and community members we now recycle white paper, newspaper, plastic, glass, car batteries and aluminum cans. Our recycling program is the largest in volume, longest operational program in New York State.

Through the profits from our Recycling Center we developed a forest and pond ecosystem(1978) in our school courtyard. The ecosystem attracts migratory species such as the peregrine Falcone and is recognized by the Nature Conservancy as a natural resource of Long Island.

We co-initiated the Youth CaN's Conference originally held at the United Nations in 1992 (now held at the American Museum of Natural History). The Ecology Council continues to participate as a major contrubutor of Youth CaN's planning committee.

Our members educate others about environmental issues and inform our communities on how to be environmentally friendly through hikes, meetings, conventions and our worldwide magazine, Planetary Notions (since 1996).
