Achimota Primary & JSS School Clean-Up Project

Achimota School's massive community clean-up exercise. Teachers provided boots, shovels, rakes, makeshift rubber gloves, containers and a truck. Students covered the several-acre-campus, picking up garbage, desilting open gutters(where mosquitoes breed) and clearing bushes (where fires start). Plastic was separated from metal and paper. The students found that the majority of the garbage was plastic containers for food sold on campus. To provide a long-term solution to supplement the short-term clean up, students placed large garbage cans at vantage points around the school to discourage littering. They also began an awareness program among students, staff and campus residents about environmental protection and recycling. The awareness program consisted of talks, colourful posters and dramatic plays to reach both the literate and illiterate members of the community. 'We learned what power students have in improving the environment and in educating each other. We also learned how much healthier and pleasant a cleaner environment is.'
