WASTE - DECHETS - ELRECICLAJE  WASTE

Waccamaw Recycles

Our fourth grade class is in charge of recycling at Waccamaw Elementary. On a daily basis we collect left over vegetable matter from the lunchroom and add it to our compost pile. We use the compost in our class garden where we grow mainly peas, radishes, greens and sunflowers. We have been collecting paper and newspaper weekly for the Solid Waste Authority in the paper recycling program that they run. Aluminum cans are collected at a monthly can drive with prizes for the classes meeting certain preset criteria, such as, most pounds for their grade or beating last month's class record. After each can drive, a newsletter is published telling about the progress made towards our school goal. The original goal was 1000 pounds. Our total as of the May drive was over 2200 pounds.
