Community Clean-up The fourth grade students at Longwood Elementary in Shalimar, Florida were asked to help restore a coastal wetland area on Eglin Air Force Base property. Over time, hurricanes and humans had heavily damaged the area. Students helped by first cleaning up the trash and debris in the area. They then helped stablize the coast line by adding hay to catch seeds that would hopefully take root and stabilize the banks of the designated area. Finally, the students spread wood chips to mark a trail through the area in hopes that people would use the trail instead of the areas that were in the process of restoration. Students collected trash, raked to clear areas, planted grass seeds, spread hay and wood chips in the hopes of improving the environment in this area. The students plan to revisit this area at the end of the school year to see the impact that they made.
