Root River 2000: Sustainable community project monitoring water quality of Root River watershed Root River 2000 students have begun a 3 year water monitoring project on the Root River that includes measuring pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, percent saturation of oxygen, turbidity, fecal coliform, nitrates, phosphates and flow rates. Macroinvertebrates are collected to determine water quality index numbers that indicate the health of the river. Students mapped and analyzed fecal coliform data collected by the Racine Health Department to try to determine if the coliform bacteria from the Root River was responsible for the 33 days of beach closings on Lake Michigan in the summer of 1997. On Earth Day some students took elementary students to Lake Michigan to teach them about water quality monitoring, while others sampled the Root River and cleaned up the river area near school.
