Alleviation of littering in Rundu via commnity clean-up

At the end of 1997 an environmental club was introduced at Dr Romanus Kampungu Junior Secondary School, Rundu. Our first project focused on waste reduction by raising awareness of littering in Rund. We researched the extent of the littering problem via photography, interviews with the principal and the town clerk and through questionnaires. Based on our research we decided to organize a "Pick Up Litter" competition in and around Rundu. The Ministry of Defence was approached to provide trucks and local businesses were asked to provide dustbin liners in which to collect litter. A map was drawn up and collection points were designated. Twenty five teams (6 members in each) entered the competition and 552 bags of litter were collected. Following this, we are hoping to raise more long-term awareness of the problem of littering and are in the process of writing a play to perform at Primary Schools in the area.
