On
the occasion of World Environment Day, UNIC and its other
UN partners organized a ceremony at the Fatima Jinnah Park in
Islamabad, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and
during which dozens of schoolchildren planted seeds around the
UN monument.
Similar
ceremonies were organized on the same day in more than 200 Pakistani
schools that are associated with UNESCO throughout the country.
The children planted kenaf seeds, a hibiscus-like crop which grows
quickly and which is being used around the world as an alternative
source for paper and building materials, thus preserving forests.
In
Islamabad, an Environment Fair was also held in the park after
the tree-planting ceremony, with a stall offering information
material from various Agencies under the common banner of the
UN System in Pakistan .
A number
of other events took place around Pakistan to celebrate World
Environment Day, to which the UN System was closely associated
to the UNDP/Global Environment Facility. These pictures show scenes
from the tree planting in Islamabad.
