NewsUNDEF Information Event on the International Day of Democracy (15 September 2008) On 15 September 2008, the first International Day of Democracy will be celebrated following the designation of this date by General Assembly Resolution 62/7. The date was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Democracy by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1997. The UN will be celebrating this event in a number of ways. UNDEF is hosting an information event for UN delegations and interested members of the public to explain how the UN Democracy Fund operates and to hear from voices from the field undertaking UNDEF funded projects. The Event will take place at Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium in the UN's main building on 15 September 2008 at 3pm (entry through the visitors' entrance - please arrive at least 10-15 minutes early). Apart from presentations about UNDEF and its projects, there will be a question and answer session on UNDEF. A detailed program of the event will be available soon. Members of civil society organizations, research institutes or other organizations or individuals active in the fields of international relations and democracy promotion are cordially invited to attend the event. Please RSVP by email with International Day of Democracy or IDD in the subject line and provide your name and, if relevant, the name of your organisation to democracyfund@un.org by 8 September 2008. Only those registered for the event will gain access to the building. |
