	The DPI/NGO Section invites you to a Townhall Meeting on The Theme for the 61st DPI/NGO Conference on 21 June 2007 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium Background Information: The annual townhall meeting will provide DPI associated NGO representatives with an opportunity to present their recommendations for the theme and venue of the 61st Annual DPI/NGO Conference. Presentations from the floor will be limited to three minutes. A written proposal should accompany the oral presentation. There will be no video screening. Preview of Next Week’s Briefing: Next week’s DPI/NGO Briefing, entitled, Autism: Raising Awareness, Changing Attitudes, will look at this little known and often misunderstood disease that affects so many children worldwide. Invited speakers include: Ms. Suzanne Wright, Co-Founder, Autism Speaks; Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, Director, National Institutes of Health, U.S.; Dr. W. Ian Lipkin, Greene Infectious Disease Laboratory; and Mr. Eric Olson, Focal Point on the Family, Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

UNDP chief pays tribute to outgoing head of campaign on anti-poverty goals

Ugandan rebels murder, rape, mutilate, displace thousands in DR Congo, Sudan – UN
21 December – In a 10-month rampage of killings, rape and mutilation in neighbouring countries that may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, the rebel Ugandan Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), has killed some 1,300 civilians, abducted 1,400 more, including hundreds of children and women, and displaced nearly 300,000 others, the United Nations reported today. As thousands more flee fighting in Pakistan, UN rushes in tents and supplies
18 December – The United Nations refugee agency is rushing hundreds of tents to supplement Government relief efforts in north-west Pakistan, where some 40,000 people have fled an intensification of military operations over the last few weeks. FULL STORY >>

UN maritime force takes part in rescue after ship sinks off Lebanese coast

UN agency for Palestinian refugees seeks $323 million for 2010
15 December – The United Nations agency entrusted with assisting millions of Palestinian refugees has launched its 2010 appeal for over $323 million at a meeting of the 22-member League of Arab States in Cairo, with a focus on those people in Gaza and the West Bank who have been hit hardest by Israel’s closures and access restrictions. More than 80,000 people driven out by clashes in north-west DR Congo – UN agency
15 December – Tribal violence in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has sent 84,000 people fleeing across the border into the Republic of the Congo since last month, with the United Nations refugee agency reporting today that supplies to assist the displaced are running low. DR Congo: UN has suspended cooperation with army units accused of rights abuses
14 December – United Nations peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have suspended logistical or other support for units of the National Armed Forces (FARDC) when there are sufficient grounds to believe their operations would violate human rights, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today.
