Who We Are:


The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) is part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat. The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, persons in situations of conflict and other groups or persons marginalized from society and development.

What's New:


Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on Indigenous Peoples' Development with Culture and Identity, 12-14 January 2010, United Nations Headquarters, New York. The Meeting will be attended by Permanent Forum members, indigenous experts, States and representatives from UN Agencies and Funds. Representatives of indigenous peoples organizations are all welcome to attend.


International Human Solidarity Day, proclaimed by the General Assembly to take place on 20 December each year. In order to increase awareness of social development issues and the importance of this international day, and in light of the rise of social media as a key means by which people are interconnected, this year we are spreading the word through a Facebook Facebook page. We hope that those of you who are currently using Facebook will become fans of the page and spread the word through your networks.


Final Report of the Third Committee on Social Development (A/64/432) is now available online in all official languages.


International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 3 December 2009. The theme this year is “Making the MDGs Inclusive: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world”.


Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on Practical Strategies to Promote Social Integration: Lessons learned from existing policies and practices, 17-19 November 2009, in Accra, Ghana, as part of the preparations for the 48th session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD), which is scheduled to take place in New York from 3 to 12 February 2010.
