The CSW is composed of 45 Member States that are elected by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and meet once a year at United Nations Headquarters in New York for ten working days to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and empowerment of women worldwide.

The active participation of NGOs is a critical element in the work of the CSW. NGOs have been influential in shaping the current global policy framework on women’s empowerment and gender equality -the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. They continue to play an important role in holding international and national leaders accountable for the commitments they made in the Platform for Action.

DAW works closely with the NGO Committee on the Status of Women (the NGO Committee), a committee of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the UN, to facilitate information exchange and NGO participation in the United Nations’ work on gender equality. The NGO Committee organizes advocacy training for NGOs, and coordinates NGO events and consultation sessions with NGO representatives in preparation for the CSW. NGOs interested in participating in these events should directly contact the NGO Committee.
