Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs)

The Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) facilitates NGOs’ participation in sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

The active participation of NGOs is a critical element in the work of the Commission on the Status of Women. NGOs have been influential in shaping the current global policy framework on women’s empowerment and gender equality -the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. They continue to play an important role in holding international and national leaders accountable for the commitments they made in the Platform for Action. DAW works closely with the NGO Committee on the Status of Women (the NGO Committee), a committee of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the UN, to facilitate information exchange and NGO participation in the United Nations’ work on gender equality. The NGO Committee organizes advocacy training for NGOs, and coordinates NGO events and consultation sessions with NGO representatives in preparation for the CSW.
